Santa Fe College (SF)

Santa Fe College is an institution that has provided the resources to change my life. I have expanded my worldview to understand the importance of diversity in today's work force. During my time in Pathways to Persistence Scholars Program (PPSP), a College Success class was required to be a part of the program. I discovered what is Emotional Quotient and how imparitive it is to personal success. All of my adult life, I struggled with communication which kept me from moving forward in my career. During my second semester at SF, Winter 2012, through the help of my support network developed at SF,, I found my passion! Being a leader, I want to help others find their passion to promote success and in-turn helping society.

ENC2210 - Technical Communications

TechnicalCommunication is designed to develop skills necessary to create several types of documents commonly encountered in business, industry, science, and government. The key emphasis in the course is placed on researched report writing. The course will also include an introduction to the following: business correspondence, documents used in the employment process, and technicaldocuments and proposals. The course also addresses effective use of visualevidence and basic guidelines for oral communication. Students will be provided with a grammar review. The course will stress the concept of researched writing as a process, with audience and purpose and primary considerations.

Our final project was to create a building design. I pursued this project in the oral competition in the RUE. Public speaking has always been my biggest challenge, so I like to challenge myself and present. Please view the video below.

Board of Trustees-Baccalaurette Scholorship

I was awarded this scholarship for writing an essay about how SF has changed my life and what I plan on doing in the future to help our community. The award was 3 semesters of paid tuition.

ENC1102 - Writing About Literature

This course is designed to emphasize critical reading and writing and requires students to engage demanding texts in a sophisticated manner. The course thus develops higher order thinking, including synthesis and evaluation; greater independence ofthought; and enhanced facility in writing, preparing students for upper-division work in college or for entry into a career. To develop these abilities, students are required to understand the concept of research and to write documented, researched essays.

Writing about literature was a challenging course focused on analyzing different types of literature and creating a reasearch paper from a group project. Our visual aid was a Prezi, so please follow the link to view our research project of the history of theater. The group was able to incorporate the theme of deocracy which was SF's theme for 2013.

ECO2013 - Macroeconomics

This course examines aggregate economic concepts, principles, and theoriesused to understand, measure, and analyze macroeconomic performance and business cycles. Students will study the political aspects of designing and implementing fiscal policy and the alternative views on its efficacy for influencing the economy. Students will also study the theories and monetary policy mechanics of the Federal Reserve System. In addition, students will study the varying models of aggregate economic performance and the impact macroeconomic policies have on business and personal decision making.

Professor Strickland agreed to conduct an Honors Contract with this course. My final project was to compare and contrast two leading econmists with very different views. Both had written books on America's economy and

Business Ethics Award

The humanities and Business department collaborated to present this award. To apply, a student had to describe an actual event where business ethics were needed to make the best decision.

My essay was focused on sales "Book of Business" and how should the organization and the individual behave. I expereinced this when I left Beechler's Printing to StorterChilds.

Honors Program

After discovering my potential to be successful at SF, I applied to the Honors Program with the goal to open doors of opprtunity by building my network. I was accepted into the Honors Program by Professor Bobby Hom. With Professor Hom's advisement, I was able to be a successful non-traditional honors student with a full-time career. Once accepted, I applied and won the James Gregg Scholorship which paid 100% of tuition. As a recipient of the James Gregg Scholarship, I was an Honors Ambassador which meant volunteering at Honors events and being involved with other civic activities. Most of the Honors courses I chose were focused more on my passion than my career. I have always been a people watcher (PSY2012) and I enjoy writing (ENC1102, ENC2210). Always focusing on my career, I completed two course through Honors Contracts with courses that are more specific to my career (ECO2210, MAN4720).

Awards

SF has many opportunities for students to succeed; furthermore, one of their slogans is "Involved Students Succeed". I can personally testify to how imparative being involved promotes success. I learned that having a network is vital, but having a network that knows what you know is the key. I became very engaged with school even though I worked a full-time job. Whenever I have an opportunity to share my journey, I express the importance of being involved, building a netowrk, and making it happen.

James Gregg Scholarship

The James Gregg Scholarship was my first and most prestigious award by the Honors Program. After being accepted into Honors, I applied and won the scholarship along with the title of Honors Ambassador. The scholarship paid for all of my tuition until I graduated with an Associates degree.

Stuart McRae Scholarship

Studying abroad was a dream of mine since I started college, but because I am a non-traditional student, I thought I would never be able to leave my family and job. After realizing my potential, I applied to Study Abroad and was accepted.

Honestly, I did not have the money to travel, but I had faith that God would find a way. One scholarship per year that paid roughly 2/3 of the costs was the Stuart McRae Scholarship. Almost everyone that Study's Abroad applies for the Stuart McRae Scholarship, and I won. If I didn't win this scholarship, I would not have been able to expereince China.

Zephyr - Persist, Persist, Persist

During my time in Pathways to Persistence Program, I wrote a poem to describe myself that was the catalyst to change my life. The poem had such a moving message that I submitted in the Zephyr. The Zephyr is a SF publication of all the best writing during the Spring of each year.
